Project description

Our main goal is to provide a sustainable source of high purity grade new radionuclides for medicine, involving from the onset upcoming major European infrastructures, to provide a single-entry point for all researchers active in this field including SMEs, global pharma, nuclear centres, hospitals and universities, using standardised access procedures. The new isotope enrichment and standardisation techniques triggered in PRISMAP will expand our services and provide them to yet unreachable remote European laboratories. PRISMAP thus strives to create a paradigm shift in the early phase research on radiopharmaceuticals, targeted drugs for cancer – one of the major diseases in Europe – theranostics and personalised medicine, shaping the European isotope landmark as a gold standard to accelerate the development of the pharma industry and ultimately of a better healthcare for the improvement of our citizens’ life.

Our objectives are:

  • Provide access to new high-purity radionuclides for medical research;
  • Create a common entry point for all researchers active in the field via a dedicated web platform;
  • Foster the understanding of the complex regulatory procedures involved in research on radiopharmaceutical products;
  • Improve nuclear data for proposed radionuclides and facilitating access to biomedical research facilities;
  • Ensure sustainability of PRISMAP on the long term

Notably, PRISMAP addresses cancer which is a major societal challenge as reconfirmed by Europe's Beating Cancer Plan.

Workplan

The PRISMAP work plan consists of 13 work packages, including 3 transnational access activities, 5 networking activities, 4 enabling research activities and a work package dedicated to the project’s management.

The transnational access activities comprise the creation of the web-based entry platform, the coordination of the user selection and access procedures, the production and dispatch of non-conventional radionuclides. They also provide access to translational research for medical applications.

The networking activities are focussed on harmonisation and standardisation of non-conventional radionuclides, fostering industrial and clinical collaboration and making available multidisciplinary training and education. They also promote the dissemination, communication, and sustainability of PRISMAP results, and the involvement of emerging infrastructures.

Enabling research activities, concentrate on transport and shipping of the novel radionuclides within the network, the optimisation of ion sources, targets and enrichment techniques for medical radionuclide production, the data generation for translational research, and the development of radiolanthanides for use in clinical settings.
